Tamilnadu Student Protests Fumes , 525 Engineering Colleges Shutdown !!!

With anti-Sri Lanka protests reaching all-time new high in Tamil Nadu,the State government has ordered to shut down 525 engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University  indefinitely. Student agitations over the Sri Lankan Tamils’ issue marked the eighth day yesterday in Tamil Nadu.

Even the hostelers have been asked to vacate the hostel premises. All Arts and Science colleges were ordered indefinite closure by the State government previously.

When the students’ anti-Sri Lanka protests reached the country’s top institute, IIT Madras campus, awareness and sentiments on the issue swelled  to new proportions; agitations in the form of hunger strikes, class boycotts and rallies quickly spread to other technical institutions.

Following IIT Madras students joining the massive students’ upsurge in the State, several private universities and self-financing college students also lent support for the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils on Monday.

Around 75 students of Anna University’s School of Architecture and Planning and AC Tech in Chennai held a demonstration on the campus while SRM Easwari Engineering College  students went on  a rally.

Medical students in Trichy and engineering students in Madurai took out rallies. Police personnel had  to lathi-charge to disperse students of Madurai’s Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College who attempted road blockades.  More than 600 students, including 250 girls of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore joined the agitation,TOI reports.

Over 500 college students courted arrested in the city for attempting to besiege the Raj Bhavan when they were forced out of their college campuses preventing them from holding agitations.

Some of the students said they were upset by the State government’s move to dilute their democratic means of protest by shutting down colleges.

Tamil Nadu is witnessing the massive upsurge amongst the student community when it all started with the fast-unto-death protest launched by eight students of city-based Loyola College a week ago.

Shocking pictures of cold-blooded killing of LTTE supremo Prabhakaran’s son, Balachandran Prabhakaran released by a private channel have evoked strong emotions against the genocidal Sri Lanka.

Pro-Tamil outfits like May 17 Movement and Save Tamils Movement in the city have also joined the anti-Sri Lanka protest in Tamil Nadu holding rallies and human chain protest,  demanding justice for the genocide committed by Sri Lanka.

Meantime, the film fraternity of Kollywood is showing their solidarity with the protesting student community in Tamil Nadu by embarking on  a hunger strike in the city at Valluvar Kottam yesterday.
